Indian Haven a gal

Classic winner and sire Indian Haven has sadly died

Chapel Stud is sad to report that one of their stallions, Indian Haven, has passed away today peacefully in his paddock at the age of 23 years old.

Indian Haven won the Group One Irish 2,000 Guineas Classic for trainer Paul D'Arcy and owners Peter Gleeson, Julian Smith and Loz Conway. He retired to stud in 2005, where he sired Stakes winners Ashram, Aspen Darlin, Beachfire, Tellovoi, Indian Rainbow, etc.

One of the very few stallions from the rapidly diminishing Byerley Turk line, Indian Haven was a son of Indian Ridge, sire of Compton Place, Namid, Definite Article and Ridgewood Pearl. He was bred by Cliveden Stud out of their dual Group Two winning mare Madame Dubois, also the dam of Group One winner Count Dubois and grandam of 2022 Group One winner Top Ranked.

Roisin Close, owner and manager of Chapel Stud, said: “It’s been an honour to stand Indian Haven on behalf of Suzi Prichard-Jones. He was a pleasure to deal with, and got every mare in-foal during the three seasons he stood with us. He will be greatly missed by us all at Chapel Stud.

“Mostly it is a huge loss to the Thoroughbred racehorse, with another thread in an already diminishing line now gone.”

Indian Haven was leased to Suzi Prichard-Jones by David Bond and his family from Withyslade Stud in Wiltshire. Initially he had stood at the Irish National Stud.

Prichard-Jones has been a huge campaigner for the Byerley Turk line promoting its history and characteristics of the progeny, as well as supporting Indian Haven with mares as did Chapel Stud and a small pool of breeders. It is hoped his legacy will continue, as he successfully covered some mares this season and continues to have winners.
