Hellvelyn enjoys a Gr.1 victory as a broodmare sire

Hellvelyn celebrated a Gr.1 winner as a broodmare sire at the weekend with Mill Stream’s victory in the Gr.1 July Cup over 6f at Newmarket, beating other Gr.1 winners Vandeek, Inisherin, Khaadem, Art Power, Kinross, etc.

Trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam for owner Peter Harris, he was following up his fine run in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June where he finished third, and his Gr.2 win in the Duke of York Clipper Stakes at York in May this year.

Bred by Redpender Stud, the four-year-old colt by Gleneagles is just the second foal out of Hellvelyn’s daughter Swirral Edge, and was purchased by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock at Tattersalls October Book 2 Sale for 350,000gns. Mill Stream also won the Gr.3 Prix de Meautry at Deauville last summer.

Swirral Edge is also the dam of Gr.2 Richmond Stakes winner and Gr.1 Prix Morny performer Asymmetric, now standing at stud. She is a half-sister to 5f Listed winner Fashion Queen out of a half-sister to 5f 2yo Gr.2 winner Wunders Dream and Gr.3 winner Grecian Dancer.

Jockey William Buick said about Millstream’s Gr.1 win: “He ran well at Ascot but we felt he had a bit more to give. Jane and the team convinced me he was a much better horse today and he duly was. That bit of rain we had really suited him and I was always very comfortable. He's so genuine, he really wants it. He puts his head out and it's so well deserved. It's my first July Cup, so I'm absolutely thrilled.”

Trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam talking about his future: “He likes three weeks between races if you look back, so we’ll go to Deauville next for the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, he’ll love the six and a half furlongs there.”

Hellvelyn has always been a proven source of speed as a sire, and it is now very exciting to see this strength in the bloodstock out of his daughters.
